Story

Based on the Victor Hugo novel of the same name, Les Miserables tells the story of Jean Valjean, a man reclaiming his life in 1815 after 19 years of wrongful imprisonment. He violates his parole to fully start anew, and police inspector Javier makes it his life’s mission to bring Jean Valjean to justice. The story jumps to the June Rebellion of 1832, and our main players are all swept up into the action, and Javier believes he can finally capture Jean Valjean. Will Jean Valjean evade Javier? Will the rebellion against the monarchy succeed? This sweeping historical epic is one of the longest running shows on Broadway and continues to captivate audiences around the world.

Know Before You Go

LES MISERABLES is a two-act musical with a 15-minute intermission. There is no recording or taking pictures of any kind during the show.

LES MISERABLES first debuted as a French-language concept album in 1980, then after years of workshopping, an English language version opened on October 8, 1985. The show then opened on the West End on December 4, 1985 at the Palace Theater, then moved to the Queen’s Theater (now the Sondheim Theater) in 2004, where it became the longest running show ever on the West End. The show opened on Broadway on March 12, 1987 at the Broadway Theater, moving to the Imperial Theatre in 1990. When the Broadway production closed on May 18, 2003, it was the second-longest running show on Broadway after CATS, but it was surpassed in 2006 by THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. LES MISERABLES is presented by kind permission of Music Theatre International. It is best enjoyed by audiences 10 and up.
